A year ago, we embarked on a journey that went beyond academic discussions, Movement Rhizome 2024.02 was a space where dance, research, and practice intertwined like a growing rhizome. Organized by postgraduate students of the Department of Fine Arts, University of Peradeniya, this international conference brought together scholars, artists, and practitioners to explore movement, body, space, and cultural practices through diverse lenses.
What made this conference unique was its inclusive and interdisciplinary nature. Movement Rhizome recognized various abilities and disabilities, ensuring a disability-friendly platform where research and creation coexisted. Alongside traditional oral and poster presentations, we introduced performance-based presentations in the Movement Rhizome Atelier, embracing multiple ways of knowledge communication.
With the support of faculty members from different disciplines, as well as collaborations with the Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, Randolph College, Virginia, USA, and the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance: Sri Lanka National Committee, the conference became a living network of ideas, connecting East and West, theory and practice, movement and meaning.
Today, we look back on those inspiring two days, celebrating the conversations, performances, and encounters that shaped this experience. To mark this milestone, we are sharing four special moments from the conference—glimpses of the vibrant exchange.
